Reasons for Shoeing
Hammer & Tong appreciates that there are numerous reasons for ensuring your horse is shod. Besides ensuring peak equine health, shoeing helps with your animal’s performance or in other instances can resolve a foot complaint/injury which is affecting your animal’s standard of life. The reasonings for shoeing are horse are stated below:
Protection
Ever since the domestication of the horse, it has been noted that horse’s feet are exposed to various conditions which damage and wear down the animals hoofs. This wear and tear is particularly problematic in modern conditions as domestic horses often traverse a variety of abrasive surfaces.
Conversely, since domestic horses do not wander freely, even when not exposed to hard surfaces, their hoofs do not get a chance to harden as they would if they had been raised in the wild, so a means of protecting the animal’s hoofs becomes very important.
Grip
Grip & stability is a performance factor in which differs from horse to horse. The horse’s role will dictate how much grip is required from the shoes.
Support
Shoes help support the foot and the limbs through the rigors of day to day use. This is especially usefull in extreme work conditions such as racing, hunting, cross country & eventing.
Surgical & Remedial
Injuries, defects and other external factors can mean a horse requires shoeing for therapeutic reasons, to help aid recovery and bring your animal back to peak health.
